Adult orthodontics

Many people assume that braces are just for kids – but nothing could be further from the truth. Whatever your age, braces can help give you a straighter smile and could even benefit your oral health. In this post, we will highlight some advantages to braces, as well as summarise our leading brace treatment – Invisalign.

So, how could braces help me?

First and foremost, braces are a way to create a straighter smile. By enhancing the aesthetics of the smile, many find treatment creates a more attractive and youthful appearance, too. But, braces do more than just align your teeth.

I’ve heard braces improve your dental health. Is this true?

Yes, in many cases they can benefit your oral health. That’s because by aligning the smile, braces can help close gaps where food can accumulate between teeth, while evenly spacing teeth that are too close together can make them easier to clean, as more of the tooth’s surface is exposed.

Can they improve bad breath?

Yes, they can. This is because in many cases, bad breath is caused by a build-up of bacteria on the teeth (or on food particles in the mouth). As we’ve mentioned, aligning the smile can make it easier to clean and prevent gaps between the teeth.

What about bite problems?

By aligning the teeth, braces can help correct – and prevent – bite problems. If issues with the bite aren’t treated, it can result in jaw pain, migraines, wear and tear on the teeth and more. Braces can be used in lots of different situations, including overbite, underbite, crossbite and open bite.

What types of braces are there?

The most popular, modern brace is Invisalign – it is successfully treated millions of patients all around the world and is known for being clear, removable and easy to care for. Following a consultation, we can offer Invisalign to our patients, right here at our York dental practice.

How does Invisalign treatment work?

We’ll check over your smile to see if you need any dental treatments before braces (such as an extraction or a root canal). We’ll then take photographs, which are used to create a 3D treatment plan, outlining how your teeth move at each stage and what your results will be. Once you start treatment, you’ll be able to use the Invisalign app to track your progress, and all you’ll need to do is change your aligners to the next set every couple of weeks to move your smile bit by bit.
