Children's Dental Care In York

Toothbrush Academy

Getting your child to brush their teeth correctly is crucial for their overall health and well-being. Our Tooth Brushing Academy is led by our Dental Hygienists & Oral Health Educators and is for children from as young as 12 months all the way through to 12 years.

What happens during the toothbrushing academy?

1. We show your child that brushing can be fun by playing play educational games whilst we guide them on how to clean their own teeth.

2. We’ll guide both of you to create a great brushing routine at home, and offer advice on how to stick with it.

3. We can help you find the most suitable oral health products for your child.

4. We’ll also discuss diet and nutrition, ways of preventing tooth decay, and ideas for healthy drinks and snacks!

5. These sessions will help your child to maintain excellent oral health, to look forward to their dental appointments and prevent fears and phobias!

6. Once they graduate from our toothbrushing academy, they will receive a graduation certificate and a prize!

  • The ideal age for a tooth academy student is 1-5 years old.

  • A soft-bristled toothbrush with a small head and a large handle that is easy for little hands to grip is ideal. Toothbrushes with cartoon characters and bright colours may be more appealing to toddlers, making it easier to get them excited about brushing their teeth.

  • A small pea-sized amount of toothpaste is suitable for children between the ages of 3 to 6 years old. For children under 3 years old, parents should use a smear of toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice. It is important to supervise your child while they brush their teeth and ensure that they spit out the toothpaste after brushing.

  • Generally, children can start using adult toothpaste when they are around the age of six, as this is when their permanent teeth start to emerge. Prior to this age, children should use toothpaste that is specifically formulated for their age.

  • Poor dental hygiene can lead to serious health problems such as gum disease, cavities, and even heart disease. Helping your child to brush their teeth correctly not only helps to prevent these health issues but also sets them up for a lifetime of good oral hygiene.

  • Tooth decay can occur as soon as the first baby tooth erupts, which is typically around 6 months of age. The risk of tooth decay increases as children consume sugary foods and drinks. Failure to properly brush teeth increases that risk further.

It’s important to ensure that your child understands how to maintain excellent oral health from a young age in order to prevent tooth decay and other dental problems.

  • If you suspect that your child has tooth decay, it is important to book a consultation as soon as possible. Depending on the severity of the decay, the dentist may recommend a filling, or even need to extract the affected tooth. If the decay is caught early enough, your child may be able to avoid more invasive procedures and simply receive a fluoride treatment with oral hygiene advice.
