What Are Dental Implants?

As time goes on, dental implants are becoming an ever-more popular choice among our patients. Durable and dependable, they’re the ideal long-term solution for tooth loss in adults. Best of all, they look the part – so it’s unlikely onlookers will ever know you have a false tooth.

In this post, our expert private dentists here at our York studio talk through all your burning dental implant questions, so you’ll know what to expect from treatment – and hopefully, put any fears to rest.

What are dental implants made of?

Tooth implants are made of two parts – a sturdy titanium root and a strong crown or bridge. The implant is fitted into a small opening made in your gum, and once healed properly, the crown is permanently fixed in place.

Does the treatment hurt?

Tooth implants are a kind of minor, minimally invasive surgery, so an anaesthetic is required for them to be carried out.  As we are trained in sedation, we can also offer this to our more nervous patients.

What happens after treatment?

Usually, you’ll need over-the-counter painkillers to manage any discomfort in the following days. You might also have to adapt what you eat for a time, to allow for healing. If you notice extensive swelling, bleeding or other complications following tooth implants, get in touch with us right away.

Why should I have dental implants?

It’s really important to preserve your natural teeth where possible and is always the aim of our private dentists. However, there are times when extractions are required, or tooth loss occurs (either through age, accidents, illness or poor dental care). Dental implants can help retain your bite and chew function while ensuring the underlying gum and bone doesn’t degrade. Additionally, having a dental implant inserted into a gap can help prevent the teeth from migrating.

How long do dental implants last?

With the right oral care and regular check-ups at our private dentists here in York, there’s no reason they shouldn’t last the rest of your life. Our expert private dentists will happily talk you through the right products and techniques for your smile – just ask!
