An Unbiased Look At Dental Implants

Infographic about the advantages of dental implants

You may think that as a private dentist, we’re biased towards certain treatments, or may even recommend things you don’t need. This couldn’t be further from the truth – and in fact, our 2018 award for Best Practice in the UK is a testament to this.

We like to think of ourselves as being responsible for the health and happiness of your smile – a mix of everyday and restorative dentistry, along with cosmetic dentistry. In this post, we’ll look at one of our most impressive private dentist treatments; dental implants.  Read on, and will share all there is to know about this treatment – good and bad – openly and honestly.

The advantages of dental implants

Where there is tooth loss, and providing there is adequate healthy gum tissue and there are no bone loss problems, we may well recommend dental implants. Here are the advantages of treatment:

* Creates a strong and sturdy tooth
* Has a lifelike appearance, and can last a lifetime
* Restores bite and chew functions
* Can help restore speech (if tooth loss was affecting this)
* Can help you look younger (missing teeth can cause the skin to sag)
* Can boost your confidence

The disadvantages of dental implants

Dental implants aren’t suitable for every individual, or in every case. Our dentist will be honest about whether it’s an appropriate option for you and will make alternative recommendations if they don’t feel the treatment is suitable. While there are most positively associated with dental implants, there can be downsides, too:

* Not advised for those in poor physical health or those who smoke
* Can be a long procedure (requires healing time in between fittings)
* Require surgery (though this is minimally invasive)
* Can be more expensive than alternatives (such as dentures)
* Not usually covered on the NHS
* Can fail (though this is rare – typically affecting under 10% of cases)

Quick questions…

Here are a few frequently asked questions about dental implants.

1. Am I suitable?

A consultation is always used to determine suitability ahead of any complex dental treatment, and this includes dental implants.

2. How do I care for dental implants?

In the same way, you should care for your natural teeth!

3. What happens if I develop a problem with my dental implant?

We will do our best to put it right. This might involve replacing it or recommending an alternative treatment.
