How To Care For Invisalign Braces

Here at Blossom Dental York, your local private dentist, we know the power of a beautiful smile. So when we came across revolutionary Invisalign braces, we knew we had to bring them to our practice. Fast forward to today, and it’s one of our most popular orthodontic options.

In this post, we’ll talk through some ways to look after your Invisalign braces – and your teeth – following treatment. That way, when you book in for your consultation with us, you’ll have a better idea of what to expect and how these incredible clear braces can give your smile a complete makeover.

1) Clean them properly

One of the top questions our patients ask us is how to look after those shiny new trays. We’re pleased to say it’s easy and quick to do – simply place them in a glass filled with denture cleanser, or you can use Invisalign’s cleaning crystals instead. Whatever you choose, make sure you avoid using toothpaste or mouthwash on your new Invisalign braces, as these can contain strong and abrasive chemicals that could scratch the trays and prevent them from being clear braces (which makes them far less discreet!).

As well as this, avoid dipping them in hot water, which could potentially warp the plastic. Bear in mind that if you don’t clean your Invisalign braces, they could start to smell as bacteria builds up.

2) Take out for eating

Your new Invisalign braces are removable – so there’s no need to have them in when you eat. Food can get stuck in all those grooves and gaps of the brace, making it harder to keep clean, and as your braces aren’t fixed to your teeth, they could make it harder to chew. Remember to pop them back in their case, as this can help prevent bacteria from building up on them.

3) Ditch the gum

Chewing with your aligners in can weaken the plastic over time, and can cause stains on your clear braces. On top of this, you may get gum stuck in the aligners, which can be difficult to clear off. We recommend steering clear of chewing gum altogether.
